South Spain has a magic that stays with you long after you return home. In June, I flew to Málaga, where my Andalusian journey began. Picking up a rental car in Málaga was the best decision—it gave me the freedom to explore Andalusia at my own pace, just like my grandparents used to do when they drove to Southern Spain decades ago. Back then, I never fully understood their fascination. Now, I absolutely do.
Córdoba – where cultures meet
The first truly impressive stop was Córdoba, and it instantly stole my heart. The unique mix of Arabic and Christian culture is visible everywhere and makes the city feel timeless. Even though the June heat in Spain was intense, every step through the old town was worth it.
The Mosque of Córdoba (Mezquita-Catedral) is, of course, the main highlight. Walking through its endless arches is an unforgettable experience and one of the most impressive sights in South Spain. But what really surprised me were the narrow streets of the old city, lined with charming palacios and patios. These traditional Córdoba patios, full of flowers and history, felt intimate and authentic.
To fully embrace the Spanish culture, I stayed in a historic apartment complex called Los Patios del Pañuelo. Sleeping inside a traditional patio house added so much depth to the experience—it felt less like tourism and more like living in Córdoba, even if only for a few days.
One of my favorite discoveries was a real hidden gem: Pari Daeza – the Balcón of Córdoba. This beautiful terrace is accessible through a hotel and offers a stunning view over Córdoba. When we visited, we were the only guests, which made the terrace feel incredibly private and peaceful—one of those travel moments you don’t plan, but never forget.
Córdoba also surprised me with its food scene. I had one of the best meals of the trip at Garum 2.1 Bistró, where creativity meets high-quality ingredients. If you’re looking for something more traditional and budget-friendly, Bodegas Mezquita Céspedes is a fantastic choice—authentic Andalusian cuisine, generous portions, and very fair prices.

Granada – an experience to remember
The next stop on my Andalusia road trip was Granada, and I can honestly say it completely took my breath away. It all started with one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in: the Palacio Gran Vía, a Royal Hideaway Hotel. From the moment you arrive, everything feels special. Valet parking welcomes you at the entrance, and before even stepping into your room, you get to choose your own room scent—a small detail that instantly sets the tone for a luxurious stay.
The beds felt like sleeping on clouds, and yes, I have to mention the Japanese high-tech toilet, which turned out to be surprisingly fun and very memorable. The hotel also offers a small spa, perfect after a long day of sightseeing, and a private rooftop terrace with some of the best cocktails in Granada. Watching the city glow at sunset from up there was pure magic.
Another big plus: the location. From the hotel, you can easily walk to the inner city of Granada, explore tapas bars, or hop on a bus to the Alhambra, which is just as convenient.

The Alhambra – the soul of Granada
And then there is the Alhambra. If there is one place you must see in South Spain, this is it. The Alhambra is not just a palace—it is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and one of the most important historical monuments in Europe.
Originally built in the 13th century by the Nasrid dynasty, the Alhambra once served as a royal palace and fortress. Walking through its halls, courtyards, and gardens feels like stepping into another world. The intricate carvings, delicate arches, and endless geometric patterns show an unbelievable level of craftsmanship. Every wall tells a story.
What makes the Alhambra truly special is the harmony between architecture and nature. The Generalife gardens, with their fountains, flowers, and water channels, were designed as a place of peace and reflection. Add to that the panoramic views over Granada and the Sierra Nevada mountains, and it becomes clear why this site has fascinated travelers for centuries.
Standing there, I was completely speechless. The Alhambra is one of those places you can’t fully capture in photos—you need to see its beauty with your own eyes. I already know that this won’t be my last visit. Granada and the Alhambra left a lasting impression on me, and I can’t wait to return.

Back in Málaga – calm and comfortable
After this unforgettable stop in Granada, I headed back to Málaga. Compared to Córdoba and Granada, Málaga felt a little less magical—but after such intense cultural highlights, the calmer atmosphere was actually quite welcome. I stayed at the Palacio Solecio Hotel, which really impressed me with its central location. It’s the perfect base if you want to explore Málaga on foot, enjoy the city’s restaurants, or simply slow down for a bit after an eventful road trip through South Spain.
If you’re looking for something peaceful outside the city center, I can highly recommend the Jardín Botánico Histórico La Concepción. This historic botanical garden is beautifully designed and ideal for a calm, relaxing day surrounded by exotic plants, shaded paths, and a touch of Andalusian elegance.

A luxurious beach day in Marbella
One of my absolute highlights near Málaga was a day trip to Marbella, which is easy to reach by car. I spent the day at the Dune Beach Club Marbella, and it was everything I hoped for—and more.
I reserved a sun bed in advance, which I strongly recommend. From the moment you arrive, the staff welcomes you in a friendly and warm way and personally accompanies you to your day bed. Little details make a big difference here: you receive towels, a bottle of wine, and attentive service throughout the day.
The adjustable sunshade was a detail I truly appreciated, allowing me to enjoy the sunshine in complete comfort throughout the day. The sand at the beach is incredibly fine, the atmosphere feels exclusive without being pretentious, and the service is absolutely on point. Everything about the Dune Beach Club feels luxurious, relaxed, and well thought out—the perfect way to end a journey through Andalusia.
