Discovering Grindelwald: A Journey Through Time
In 2022, I returned to the enchanting region of Grindelwald, Switzerland, a place I had fond memories of visiting with my parents as a child. The transformation of this picturesque area over the years has been remarkable, blending modern conveniences with the timeless beauty of the Swiss Alps.
One of the most striking changes is the impressive Grindelwald Terminal, a hub where numerous cable car routes and trains converge. This state-of-the-art facility seamlessly connects travelers to the region’s top attractions, making it easier than ever to explore the breathtaking landscapes.
During my stay, I was fortunate to lodge at the Aspen Alpin Lifestyle Hotel, which offered a delightful half-board service and the special Jungfrau Travel Pass. This pass allowed unlimited use of public transport and cable cars, providing unparalleled access to the surrounding beauty. The hotel’s small spa area was a perfect retreat after a day of hiking, offering relaxation and rejuvenation. Positioned on the less touristy side of Grindelwald, the hotel provided serene evenings with spectacular views.
The Jungfraujoch (3,454m), known as the „Top of Europe,“ is a must-visit. Reaching this stunning destination requires a specific train ride from the Kleine Scheidegg. Once at the top, visitors can marvel at the Ice Palace, featuring intricate ice sculptures, and indulge in delicious treats at the Lindt chocolate shop. Stepping outside, you are greeted with snow-covered vistas year-round, a unique experience that underscores the beauty and fragility of this alpine environment. Sadly, the glaciers are receding, a stark reminder of climate change’s impact. I vividly recall larger glaciers and more extensive ice cover from my childhood visits, highlighting the urgency of preserving these natural wonders.
One of my favorite spots in Grindelwald is the tranquil Bachalpsee. Accessible via a scenic cable car ride, this alpine lake is a peaceful haven where the air is crisp and pure. On a challenging yet rewarding hike from the middle station to Bachalpsee, I encountered a variety of small alpine flowers and enjoyed the calm of the less-traveled trail. While the charming marmots I remembered from my youth have retreated to quieter areas, the lake remains a serene and picturesque destination.
In conclusion Grindelwald offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and modern amenities, making it an ideal destination for both nostalgic returnees and new visitors. Whether you’re marveling at the views from the Jungfraujoch, relaxing at a luxurious hotel, or hiking to the serene Bachalpsee, Grindelwald promises breathtaking moments and unforgettable experiences.

Discover the Hidden Gems of Zurich
Visiting Zurich, Switzerland, is always an enchanting experience, and each trip reveals new hidden gems and delightful surprises. My most recent visit in March 2024 was no exception. Staying at the luxurious Alex Lake Zürich, a 5-star hotel nestled on the shores of Lake Zurich, made the trip even more memorable.
The Alex Lake Zürich offers an unparalleled experience with its stunning lakeside location and spacious rooms. The hotel provides a private parking lot, and upon arrival, guests are greeted with welcome drinks and refreshing wet towels. My room boasted a well-equipped kitchen and exquisite decor, with a breathtaking view of the lake and the Alps. Waking up to this view and enjoying a delicious breakfast, a combination of buffet and à la carte options, was simply amazing. While the hotel’s breakfast was outstanding, for dinner, I recommend exploring local restaurants.
One culinary highlight of my trip was dining at Restaurant Pöstli in Lachen. This gem, discovered through exceptional high reviews on Google Maps, is just a short drive away. The restaurant offers incredible dishes at reasonable prices, and the flavors were unforgettable. I highly recommend making the trip for an exceptional dining experience.
While Zurich is known for its main attractions, such as Bahnhofstrasse and the Old Town, the city also boasts several hidden gems that are worth exploring.
Patumbah-Park
One such gem is Patumbah-Park, a serene spot featuring beautiful magnolia and cherry trees, as well as sculptures. This park, a blend of greenery and historical architecture, is especially lovely in spring when the trees are in full bloom. It remains relatively uncrowded, providing a peaceful retreat primarily known to locals.
Chinagarten (Chinese Garden)
Another must-visit is the Chinagarten. Though it can be a bit crowded, the garden’s meticulous maintenance and serene atmosphere make it a delightful stop.
Lakeside Walks and Seasonal Decorations
Strolling along Lake Zurich is always a pleasure, with numerous picturesque spots to sit and relax. Depending on the season (e.g. Easter), you might find the city’s fountains adorned with flowers, adding a festive touch to your visit.
A Chocolate Lover’s Paradise: Lindt Museum
No trip to Zurich is complete without indulging in Swiss chocolate. The Lindt Museum offers an immersive experience where you can taste liquid chocolate, various creations, and the famous Lindor balls. After the museum, consider taking a ferry back to the city for a unique perspective of Zurich.
